A Visit with Boys & Girls Club Alum, Denzel Washington

He needed no introduction. His accolades and achievements are well known. But above them all, at least in our eyes, he is a former Boys & Girls Club kid. And for that we are most proud. On September 25, over 30 BGCGW teen members had the opportunity to spend time and glean a bit of wisdom from Club alum Denzel Washington.
Mr. Washington spoke about his days as a Club kid at the Boys & Girls Club of Mount Vernon. He credited the time he spent there and the mentoring he received from caring staff as key to his survival and success. He stressed the importance of the Club being a safe haven and positive alternative to the streets.
His engaging style and humor inspired the kids to express themselves. He invited each teen in the room to share their aspirations and how the Club has impacted their life. We heard kids who hope to be an anesthesiologist, French Interpreter for the FBI, engineer, neo-natal nurse and a pastor. We are so proud of our youth for their active participation and voice.
“Everything you’ve seen or heard about me began with lessons I learned to live by at the Club.” Denzel Washington. Great Future Start Here!
