WHO: Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington members, staff, and supporters

WHAT:  Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington, Club kids, and a host of local community supporters will hold a public demonstration urging the D.C. Council and Mayor to restore funding to the Jelleff Community Center Club in Georgetown.

WHEN: 5:15 PM; May 22, 2024

WHERE: Jelleff Community Center Club, 3265 S. St. NW, Washington, D.C., 20007

WHY: The D.C. Government has indicated that the Jelleff Community Center Boys & Girls Club will not receive funding for two years while the Club undergoes renovations. Closing the Club and not providing funding for temporary operations would eliminate a place for 1,500 kids and teens to go after school and during the summer. It also unnecessarily destabilizes families that have come to rely upon the Club’s mentors and youth development programming.

BGCGW is launching a campaign to urge the D.C City Council to fund the Jelleff Club. Club member families, local schools and other affected community members are being encouraged to write, email, and call DC Council members and the Mayor.

HOW: In addition to emails, letters and phone calls, Club kids will write too; using visual storytelling to depict how the Jelleff Club has positively impacted their lives, and why it is imperative for the Club to remain open and funded for programs. During the public demonstration, Club kids as well as staff will have the opportunity to urge members of the D.C Council to keep the Club open.
