Tim has been with BGCGW for five years serving as a program director for the S.H.I.N.E (Shaping Healthy Identities through New Experiences) program, a nationally recognized, DCPS vetted, pregnancy prevention effort that primarily serves low income, DC youth in the 5th-9th grades. Together with co-director, Monife Marshall, Tim manages this 22-week curriculum of interactive activities and informative sessions serving 20-60 students in DC Public and Chartered schools as well as in Boys & Girls Clubs sites.
Tim brings to BGCGW a pioneering youth development spirit that has been focused on students struggling to meet academic and social challenges within school and community. His commitment has spanned the globe having worked in such locales as Denmark, Spain, Uganda and Finland. He created a teaching and learning module that has been featured in the Irish Development Education web portal and received an award from the European Commission for best youth project. He developed the first alternative Urban Music high school and afterschool program in Stockholm Sweden.
Tim has identified a need for cultural accommodation programs within Washington D.C. and started a male mentorship overnight retreat called “Lead, Don’t follow” to address issues concerning male adolescence and misdirected behavior. When asked what it takes to make a positive impact on the kids he serves, Tim says, “Because of the sensitive nature of the topics we discuss in the program, we must be committed to developing strong relationships with our students. It is through trust and mutual respect that young people are willing to open up about the issues they face. It is then we can begin to address the challenge and the individual in a meaningful way.”
Tim holds a Masters degree in Educational Leadership and School improvement from the University of Manchester, United Kingdom.
