On Wednesday, March 12th, 2014, the teens at the George M. Ferris Jr. Boys and Girls Clubhouse #6 participated in an hour long interview skills workshop entitled “How to Interview & Land the Job” hosted by our very own Manager of Human Resources, Melissa Ricks. During this workshop, Ms. Melissa helped the teens understand how to win over their future employers from start to finish. Our teens learned the importance of dressing the part, even when just picking up an application; how to be properly prepared by understanding the mission statement of their future employer; and when and how to follow-up after an interview.
Then on Thursday, March 13th, we shared in a day of personal growth for our middle school students as the boys and girls met separately to participate with guest presenters.
The girls participated in a healthy lifestyles program hosted by Girls Health Ed. Girls Health Ed. is a start-up organization focused on making the difference in young girls lives to help them understand their changing bodies while informing them of decisions they can make to live healthier lives. After the informative workshop, the girls participated in an hour long yoga session where they learned how to calm their breathing and stretch their bodies in order to both work their muscles out and clear their minds of daily stresses.
Jerome Jackson, a former BGCGW employee and currently working for the Montgomery County Government, led the middle school boys in an informative session about growing up to become a responsible man, how to break away from negative stereotypes and how to dress for different occasions. Members got a chance to sample popular colognes from Sephora and then were able to take home two samples to keep for themselves! As a follow up, members will present the information they learned to the whole group. The member with the best presentation will receive a $10 gift card from Subway.
