Girls and staff on the 2013 Retreat

When it comes to teen pregnancy prevention our Shaping Healthy Identities through New Experiences (SHINE) program is making sure our members are well prepared to make the best decisions for great futures.

This fall SHINE’s “2nd Annual Girl Talk Ovenight Retreat” took place at Shepherd Springs Outdoor Ministry, where the girls were exposed to a more rustic life. While enjoying the countryside, the girls were reminded of the importance of good decision making, high self-esteem, education, teamwork and last, but not least, proper dining etiquette.

Discussions and workshops were led by guest speakers Barbara Holt Streeter, owner of the PR & Protocol Group and Shumeka Moore, teen mother and motivational speaker. Retreat highlights also included nature walks, early morning yoga, a farm visit with chickens, cows and lambs, s’mores on an open fire, swimming and fun character-building activities. One of the girls’ favorite new experiences was  “Meatless Mondays.” After getting over the initial shock of eating a meal with no meat, the girls really enjoyed a hearty, satisfying meal prepared with lots of love.

SHINE’s programming will continue this year with a number of outings and workshops including:  healthy life skills activities, the Arts, etiquette, and building self-esteem. Learn more about S.H.I.N.E and see pictures from the Retreat on Facebook.
