Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington (BGCGW) gives children hope, tools for success, and a vision and foundation for their future. Through our doors, our area youth receive the guidance, opportunity and love they need to become productive, civic-minded adults.
The Youth of the Year (YOY) program, which was created by Boys & Girls Clubs of America in 1947, is designed to promote and recognize service to Club and community, academic performance, strong moral character, life goals, poise and public speaking ability and contributions to family and spiritual life.
This year’s winner, Henry Lopez, became a proud member of the Culmore Character Club after his family immigrated to Virginia from Guatemala nearly 15 years ago. Henry reined the 2013 YOY title after a series of interviews and the smooth and clear execution of his speech, which highlighted his collegiate goals. Henry plans to take courses in engineering, and was awarded the Honor Scholarship from George Mason University–
awarded to only 1% of incoming students.
